Governor Kemp visits GEDIA in Attendorn: A sign of successful transatlantic cooperation

Last Friday, Brian Kemp, Governor of the US state of Georgia, visited the GEDIA Automotive Group in Attendorn, Germany, together with a high-ranking delegation. The Governor was accompanied by a team led by Commissioner Pat Wilson, as well as representatives of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The visit underlined the close and successful partnership between the company and the US state of Georgia.
GEDIA, a leading automotive supplier with approximately 4,700 employees worldwide, has operated a state-of-the-art thermoforming plant in Dalton, Georgia since 2021. GEDIA employs approximately 700 people in North America, with about 65 at the Dalton site. Even before construction of the plant began, the company maintained close cooperation with the local government in Georgia, which is considered a key success factor in the smooth development of the site. The visit to Attendorn was intended to further strengthen the excellent relations and emphasize the importance of transatlantic cooperation.
Insight into state-of-the-art technologies
The delegation received a comprehensive tour of the Attendorn thermoforming plant, which is comparable to the site in Dalton, Georgia, in many respects. Particularly noteworthy was the fact that the tour and the explanations of the individual processes were carried out by plant employees. This gave Governor Kemp the opportunity to talk directly to the employees who work with the modern facilities on a daily basis. The Governor was able to ask specific questions about the processes and thus gained a deep insight into the practical work. This was a valuable experience for both sides: the employees were able to showcase their expertise, while the Governor gained an authentic impression of the workflows.
Success despite adverse circumstances
The construction of the plant in Dalton, which was carried out under extremely difficult conditions, was a particular success. Construction began during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time characterized by uncertainties, material shortages and travel restrictions. On top of that, the company had to overcome a major cyber attack shortly before. Despite these challenges, GEDIA was able to complete the plant on schedule without delays. This achievement illustrates the company's determination and professionalism in achieving excellence even under adverse circumstances.
Challenges and orientation in the new political environment
In an increasingly complex political and economic landscape in the U.S., GEDIA values relationships like the one with Governor Kemp. “The political environment is changing rapidly, and to remain successful, we need to orient ourselves well and strengthen the right networks,” said Helmut Hinkel, CEO of the GEDIA Group.
An evening at Schnellenberg Castle
The visit was capped off with an evening reception at the historic Schnellenberg Castle. In this special setting, the participants deepened their conversations and discussed the future development of GEDIA in the USA. “The relationship between GEDIA and Georgia is a prime example of a successful international partnership,” emphasized Governor Kemp. GEDIA CEO Helmut Hinkel agreed: “We are proud of the trust and support we receive from the Georgia government. This is the basis for our success and future growth.”
Growth and perspectives
With the opportunity to triple production capacity in Dalton on the already developed site, GEDIA is optimistic about the future. The discussions during the visit made it clear how committed and business-friendly the federal state of Georgia is. Governor Kemp emphasized his openness and determination to attract new investors to the state and to actively support companies. The comprehensive support that companies like GEDIA receive from the local government throughout the entire investment and development phase is particularly impressive. This clear focus on economic development creates excellent conditions for growth and innovation and underlines Georgia's position as a preferred location for international companies. Both sides are confident about a long-term and successful cooperation.
